Former Congressmen populating cable news

Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC is a pretty good program, but right now Mr. Matthews is interviewing Tom DeLay and Christopher Shays, former congressmen. Yesterday someone had on Rick Santorum.

I love it when they bring back the most smug, beligerant, condescending, self-serving, lying, petulant examples of the Republican party who are not even in congress anymore.

We need to be constantly reminded how close to a dark-age Feudal system of government we came, so we will never ever ever again allow this kind of ignorant, bigoted hubris to almost destroy America.

Opra, Mutual of Omaha, and the "Aha-Moment."

So Oprah and Harpo Productions and Mutual of Omaha Insurance are fighting over possession of the partially generic saying “Aha-Moment” and that is entirely improper English?

Either Harpo or Mutual of Omaha will, in the end, repeat to the public the phrase "Aha Moment" as though it were a correct expression?

It’s called an Epiphany: According to Webster’s dictionary, it’s a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something. (2): an intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an event) usually simple and striking. (3): an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure b: a revealing scene or moment.

You can't coin a term from a generic word following a grunt. You coin terms using root languages like Greek or Latin.

The expense to which both of these entities will go to copyright improper language, and the extent to which the media is covering this idiocy is telling of a very important goal that most corporations in America strive for:

To keep the public stupid.

Editorial Board

If I volunteered for membership on the editorial board of the Illinois State Journal Register, my skills would be woefully inadequate because I couldn't disqualify anything controversial from being published. Nothing shocks me anymore and I would eagerly expose all the readers to the seedy underbelly of reality that lurks outside the kitchen window in the wee hours of the morning.

Oh well. I think I'll just be my own editorial board right here thank you.

Consumption Taxes

Some people argue in favor of a sales tax instead of an income tax. This would mean that only those who indulge in certain consumption will pay the taxes.

However, certain things are not simply indulgences. Some are necessities, like food.

A person making $20 per hour and a person making $8 buy the same product, who pay the higher sales tax?

If you look at the short end, you would say neither because the tax would be the same. Outside that box, however, you would understand that the greater burden is on the person who earns less as a percentage of total income and expenses are calculated at the end of the month.

The perception of cost would also be much greater when tied directly to a good or service, instead of gradually drawing taxes out each week. The Cigarette tax is now high enough to cause people to quit smoking in droves. It's a good thing I quit smoking in 2004.
